Entrevista a Devil´s Train
Devil´s Train es una banda formada por miembros de STRATOVARIUS, MYSTIC PROPHECY, EVERGREY... que han sacado recientemente su primer disco de estudio, emprendido una gira por Europa, que el día 10 de mayo les traerá a Ourense.
Galiza Metal les hemos entrevistado con el motivo de su visita a nuestras tierras.

Galiza Metal: Hi guys! Welcome to Galiza Metal! We could say you are a multinational band due to the the countries you come from, Greece and Finland, so far away one from the other. How was Devil’s Train created? Who of you got in touch with whom?
Devil´s Train: We would like to thank you Alba, we are so happy you’re giving us the chance to talk about Devil's Train !!!
Quoted singer-producer R.D. Liapakis:“ … For almost ten years now, I've been thinking of making a band, moving in the style of Heavy Rock, influenced by blues .... I spoke with many people, some of them very good and well known musicians, but I couldn't really find guys with the same vision as me ... in 2009 I met Laki (Ragazas) and he sent me some material of his own music, and I immediately realized that he had all this "dirty rock'n'roll" approach and style of playing I was looking for ... as he told me, he had pretty much the same concept in his mind of the music to be made ...So we started exchanging ideas for composing songs ... he came over to Germany and in 10 days' time we finished the 12 songs you now hear in the band’s 1st album ... By the beginning of 2010, I was on tour with Mystic Prophecy, warming up for Stratovarius, where Jörg and I met, I popped the idea to him as well and he liked it a lot … During the summer of 2010 we started recording the drum and guitar tracks for the album … It was when we realized that this was WAY MORE than a side thing … It was the birth of something really good … Later on, Jörg suggested Jari to be the bass player ... he was indeed, the perfect missing link …”
GM: What was the main goal of creating Devil’s Train?
DT: Anyone who has listened to our music can clearly see that this band is a vehicle for great Rock’n’Roll songs … dirty and nasty to the bone, heavy as hell, but full of heart and soul … And we really think this style of music picked us, and not the other way around …Anyone can see that we are not trying to re-invent Rock'n'Roll music ... this music is here for the last 40-50 years, and we feel so happy to give our own tribute, our own perspective to it ... It's more about feeling great about the music we make ...
GM: You publish your album on february 17th of 2012. This record astonishes all fans as the band formation is composed of band members of previous and well known bands as Stratovarius, Saxon, Evergrey, Mystic Prophecy… But the thing that astonishes us the most is Devil’s Train own sound. Contrary to what we expected, we could say Devil Train is a Hard Rock band. Was this intended or did you get to this sound as a consequence of composing?
DT: When we were recording the first album we felt that everything was flowing so naturally during the whole process, which made me realize one basic truth ... in this style of music, just being a great musician and player is not enough ... you have to feel every note, you have to be able to pass this great feel into the music ...and either you have this charisma, or not ... and I'm so happy to see that everyone in this band has got what it takes to give this kind of magic, which was so vividly engraved in the recording ...
GM: Your lyrics are quite varied. You talk about love for rock (fire and water), of lustful hotel rooms (Room 66/64), of the road. But what is exactly that you want to transmit to the audience with the contents of this kind of lyrics?
DT: The music and lyrics of Devil’s Train is pretty much about Rock'n'Roll life ... living on the road, music, partying all day and all night, women ... the lyrics on "Fire And Water" are definitely about the love for Rock music .... you can see the youngboy listening to his idols when growing up, playin air guitar in front of the mirror, and having a great desire to live this dream ... yes it pretty much talks about our growing up, as it appeals for every kid around the world, who loves this kind of music ... about "Room 66-64" now ... well, you can clearly see this is about the first whorehouse experience hahahahaha .... there's nothing like a beautiful woman posing in front of you, seducing you to your first sin ...But we also talk about other stuff, like in "Coming Home", which is an anti-war song ... "Yellow Blaze" is about nuclear pollution and how people should take action against nuclear programs, "To The Ground" speaks about drug addiction and the struggle to be free from them, "Forever" is about love … aahhhh … True Love …So, the main idea is really simple … life is short … life is hard … we mustn’t waste time … we should live before we die ….
GM: I believe you cannot write something interesting without previously having lived quite a few of diferent experiences. Is there any particular experience behind any of those tracks? Could you tell us about it?
DT: Yes you are right … True experiences make your music even more convincing … Well, “Fire And Water”, it’s obvious that it’s true for the most of us … “Forever” … True Love … I think it’s so easy to understand … you can see from songs like “Yellow Blaze” and “Coming Home” that we are politically and socially sensitive as the person next to us … all of us have experienced the sense of wrong in this world we live in .. that’s why the music of Devil’s Train is so appealing to everyone.
GM: What would it be the track of the album that best defines Devil’s Train?
DT: We cannot actually distinguish any of our songs, they are our babies, we like them all equally … But if we had to choose, it would be the title track “Devil’s Train” … We think this song has all the ingredients of Rock ‘n’ Roll … driving power, passion, desire to take it to the limit, live for the moment …
GM: It’s been a while since the coming out of your first record. Looking back, how do you feel about it?
DT: Looking back … let us tell you, we wouldn’t change a thing … we feel so proud of what we have done so far, and if we had the chance to do it again, we would do it exactly the same … It’s something we ‘ve been wanting to do it for a long time and we are so happy to be a part of this band !!!
GM: In May you are going to embark into a tour around Europe and, eventually, to Spain. Any expectative?
DT: Yes we have some shows booked for this year around Europe, and let us tell you, we are so excited about coming to Spain for the first time as a band and play .!!! We really can’t wait !!!
GM: Among the diferent places in Spain that you are going to visit, is there any special place that you would like to go? Why?
DT: We wouldn’t wanna distinguish any of the places we will visit in Spain, we want our shows to be equally good, everywhere … We don’t think we ‘ll have much free time to actually enjoy our stay, so we would like to stay focused on giving our very best to our Spanish fans !!!
GM: From previous experience in Spain, how could you describe the audience attitude?
DT: From our experience so far, the Spanish audience is so good … Crazy Good !!! Full of energy and passion, so committing, and we are glad to see that our first album was received so positively !!! We are so looking forward to visit again your beautiful country, we think it’s gonna be a great week in Spain !!!
GM: About Devil’s Train continuity, have you thought about it? Will you continue the band in the long term?
DT: Let us tell you, that we are here to stay !!! We love what we do so much, we wouldn’t miss the opportunity to play more shows, make more records in the future !!!
GM: Will there be a new Devil’s Train record soon?
DT: Yes !!! And we ‘re so excited about it !!! Once again, it will be a feastof Pure Rock'n'Roll, with all the heaviness, and, as always, full of heart and soul ...But at the same time we feel like we are taking everything to the next level, in termsof composition, flavor and edge ... The four of us have a great chemistry together,and this will show once more, only a lot more ... DT: We believe that the lovers of this music, and all the people who have the passion for the good-old-Rock'n'Roll-party-all-day music will definitely find what they are looking for in Devil’s Train ... it’s a band that speaks right to the heart, has amazing balls of groove, and gives so much energy that it can drive you crazy !!!

Galiza Metal: Hola chicos, ¡bienvenidos a Galiza Metal! Podría decirse que Devil´s Train sois una banda multinacional, debido a vuestros países de procedencia, Grecia y Finlandia, tan distantes entre sí. ¿Cómo ha nacido Devil´s Train? ¿Quién de vosotros se puso en contacto con quién?
Devil´s Train: ¡¡Nos gustaría darte las gracias, Alba, estamos muy contentos de que nos des la posibilidad de hablar de Devil´s Train!!!
Productor-cantante R. D. Liapakis: "Durante hace ahora casi diez años, he estado pensando en hacer una banda, moviéndome en el estilo del Hard Rock, bajo la inflluencia del blues. Hablé con muchas personas, algunos de ellos músicos muy buenos y conocidos, pero realmente no podía encontrar a tipos con la misma visión que yo. En 2009 encontré a Laki (Ragazas) y me envió algún material de su propia música, e inmediatamente supe que llevaba dentro todo este "rock and roll sucio " y el estilo de tocar que yo buscaba. Como él me dijo, tenía en mente el mismo concepto de hacer música que yo... Entonces comenzamos a cambiar ideas para componer canciones... Vino a Alemania y en 10 días terminamos las 12 canciones que ahora escuchas en el primer álbum. A principios de 2010, yo estaba de viaje con Mystic Prophecy , entonándome para Stratovarius, dónde me encontré a Jörg , le expuse la idea también y le gustó esto mucho. Durante el verano de 2010 comenzamos la grabación de la batería y las pistas de guitarra para el álbum. Fue cuando supimos que este era EL CAMINO, más que una cosa vanal, esto era el nacimiento de algo realmente bueno. Más tarde Jörg aconsejó a Jari ser el bajista, era auténtico, el eslabón perdido perfecto"
GM: ¿Con qué objetivo surge la idea de crear Devil´s Train?
DT: Alguien que ha escuchado a nuestra música claramente puede ver que este esta banda es un vehículo para grandes canciones de Rock and roll, sucia y repugnante, pesada como el infierno, pero llena de corazón y alma … Y realmente pensamos que este estilo de la música nos escogió, y no otro camino... Se puede ver que no tratamos de inventar de nuevo la música Rock and roll , esta música estuvo aquí durante los 40-50 años pasados, ¡y nos sentimos tan felices de darle nuestro propio tributo, nuestra propia perspectiva...! Es más el sentimiento de sentirse bien que la música que hacemos.
GM: Devil´s Train editáis vuestro album debut el 17 de febrero de 2012, sorprendiéndonos a todos los amantes de la música con una formación estelar integrada por miembros de bandas tan emblemáticas como Stratovarius, Saxon, Evergrey, Mystic Prophecy... Pero lo que todavía nos ha sorprendido más aún es el sonido de Devil´s Train, puesto que, al contrario de lo esperado, podríamos definir a Devil´s Train como una banda de hard rock. ¿Ha sido algo totalmente intencionado llegar a este sonido o simplemente al componer los temas han ido saliendo así?
DT: Cuando estábamos grabando el primer álbum sentimos que todo fluía tan naturalmente durante el proceso entero, que me hizo llegar a una verdad básica en este estilo de la música: ser un gran músico no es bastante, tienes que sentir cada nota, tienes que ser capaz de transmitir este gran sentido en la música. O tienes este sentimiento, o no lo tienes. Y yo soy muy feliz al ver que cada uno en este disco tiene todo esto para transmitir esta magia, que quedó tan vistoso en la grabación.
GM: Vuestras letras son variadas: habláis del amor por el rock (Fire And Water), de lujuriosas habitaciones de hotel (Room 66/64), de carretera... pero, ¿qué es lo que pretendéis transmitir exactamente en conjunto con las letras de este trabajo?
DT: La música y la letra de Devil´s Train son bastante sobre la vida del Rock and roll, viviendo sobre la marcha, la música, fiestas todo el día y toda la noche, las mujeres... La letra sobre "Fire and Water" es definitivamente sobre el amor por la música rock. Puedes ver al muchacho jóven escuchar a sus ídolos mientras crece, tocando la guitarra en el aire delante del espejo y teniendo un gran deseo de vivir este sueño... Sí, esto habla bastante de nuestro crecimiento, como esto le ocurre a cada niño en el mundo entero al que le gusta esta clase de música. Sobre "Room 66-64" puedes ver claramente que va sobre la primera visita a un burdel hahahahaha... No hay nada como una mujer hermosa que posa delante tuya, seduciéndote a tu primer pecado... Pero también hablamos de otras materias, como en "Coming Home", que es una canción pacifista. "Yellow Blaze" habla sobre la contaminación nuclear y como la gente debería tomar medidas contra los programas nucleares, "To The Ground" habla sobre la drogadicción y la lucha para ser libre de eso, "Forever" habla sobre el amor… aahhhh… el Amor Verdadero… En fin, la idea principal es que la vida es muy simple, la vida es corta, es difícil, no debemos perder el tiempo… Deberíamos vivir antes de que muramos.
GM: Yo creo que no se puede componer algo bueno sin haber tenido antes muchas experiencias diferentes. ¿Hay alguna vivencia personal específica oculta tras alguno de estos temas? ¿Podríais contárnosla?
DT: Sí, estás en lo cierto, las expreriencias verdaderas hacen la música aún más convincente. Bien, lo que dice "Fire and Water", es obvio que es verdadero para la mayor parte de nosotros; "Forever",el Amor Verdadero, yo pienso que es muy fácil de entender, puedes verlo en canciones como "Yellow Blaze" y "Coming Home", somos política y socialmente sensibles como la persona que está a nuestro lado … Todos nosotros hemos experimentado algún sentimiento negativo en este mundo en que vivimos, es por eso que la música de Devil´s Train apela a cada uno de nosotros.
GM: ¿Cuál es el tema del disco que mejor define la esencia de Devil´s Train? ¿Por qué?
DT: En realidad no podemos hacer distinción entre ninguna de nuestras canciones, son nuestros bebés, nos gustan todas igualmente. Pero si escogiéramos, la ista sería el título "Devil´s Train" Pensamos que esta canción tiene todos los ingredientes del Rock n Roll, que induce el poder, la pasión, el deseo de tomarlo al límite, vivir para el momento…
GM: Ya ha pasado algún tiempo desde la salida de este primer trabajo... Volviendo la vista atrás, ¿qué balance hacéis?
DT: Mirando hacia atrás, déjanos decirte que no cambiaríamos nada, ¡nos sentimos tan orgullosos de lo que hemos hecho hasta ahora!, y si tuviéramos la posibilidad de hacerlo otra vez, lo haríamos exactamente igual … es algo que queríamos hacer desde hace mucho tiempo y estamos tan contentos de ser parte de esta banda...
GM: Este mes de mayo os embarcaréis en una gira que os llevará a recorrer España, ¿qué previsiones hacéis acerca de esta gira?
DT: Sí tenemos unos shows cerrados para este año alrededor de Europa, y déjanos decirte que tenemos muchas ganas de ir a España por primera vez como una banda y tocar!!! ¡¡Realmente no podemos esperar!!!
GM: De entre todos los lugares de la geografía española que visitaréis, ¿hay alguno en el que tengáis especial interés? ¿Por qué?
DT: No queremos hacer distinción entre los sitios que visitaremos en España, queremos que nuestros shows esten igualmente bien en todas partes… No creemos que tengamos mucho tiempo libre ocio para disfrutar realmente de nuestra estancia, entonces nos gustaría enfocarlo en dar lo mejor de nosotros a nuestros fans españoles.
GM: De las anteriores veces que habéis estado en España, ¿cómo definiríais la actitud del público español en vuestros conciertos con respecto al público de otros países del mundo?
DT: De nuestra experiencia hasta ahora, la audiencia española es genial, ¡locamente genial! Llena de energía y pasión, y nos alegramos de ver que nuestro primer álbum fue recibido tan positivamente. Estamos viendo de visitar más adelante este país tuyo tan hermoso, ¡creemos que va a ser una gran semana en España!
GM: Respecto a la continuidad de Devil´s Train, ¿qué habéis pensado? ¿Seguiréis con el proyecto a largo plazo?
DT: Déjanos decirte, que estamos aquí para quedarnos. Amamos lo que hacemos tanto, que no podemos perder la oportunidad de hacer más conciertos y más discos en el futuro.
GM: ¿Habrá un segundo disco de Devil´s Train próximamente? ¿Podríais adelantarnos algo?
DT: ¡¡Sí!!! ¡¡Y estamos tan entusiasmados!!! Otra vez, esto será un banquete de Rock and roll puro, con todo su peso, y, como siempre, lleno de corazón y alma... Pero al mismo tiempo sentimos que debemos llevar todo al siguiente nivel en términos de composición, sabor... Los cuatro tenemos una gran química juntos, y esto se mostrará una vez más... Solamente haremos anuncios, pondremos fotos y vídeos de la fabricación del album en las redes sociales de la banda (la página oficial de facebook y el twitter).
GM: Hasta aquí la entrevista chicos. Muchísimas gracias por dedicarnos vuestro tiempo, ha sido un auténtico placer. Antes de terminar me gustaría que dedicáiseis unas palabras a nuestros lectores y a toda la gente que os sigue...
DT: ¡¡Creemos en los amantes de esta música, y toda la gente que siente pasión por el el viejo buen rock n roll y la fiesta todo el día. Definitivamente encontrarán lo que buscan en Devil´s Train... Esta es una banda que habla el directa al corazón, con pelotas, y desprende tanta energía que te volverá loco.
